Graduate Admission: The DOs and DON'Ts

The graduate school admissions process is not just completing a graduate school application and sending it in. Applying can be complicated and time-consuming. From filling out stacks and stacks of forms to trying to make a good impression on the graduate school admission committee, there's a whole lot to do.
This list will help you get the job done well and on time!

The DOs for the graduate admission process

  • DO start your graduate school application one to one-and-a-half years before you plan to enroll.
  • DO make sure you double-check all your deadlines -- they may be different than undergraduate deadlines.
  • DO make every element of your application the best it can possibly be.
  • DO get your financial aid application in as early as possible. Financial aid for grad school is limited.
  • DO fill out your financial aid application online, if possible.
  • DO read applications and directions carefully.
  • DO make sure that everything that is supposed to be included is enclosed.
  • DO start asking for letters of recommendation at least six months before your application deadline.
  • DO fill out your own applications. Type the information yourself to avoid crucial mistakes.
  • DO make copies of all applications, and practice filling one out before you complete the original.
  • DO type or neatly print your answers, and then proofread the applications and essays several times for accuracy.
  • DO ask someone else to proofread them for you as well.
  • DO demonstrate that you are professional, focused, and very interested in the field you’ve chosen to study.
  • DO be truthful, and do not exaggerate your accomplishments.
  • DO keep a copy of all the forms you submit.
  • DO be thorough and turn things in on time.

The DON'Ts for the graduate admission process

  • DON'T use correction fluid. If you type your application, use a correctable typewriter or liftoff strips to correct mistakes. Better yet, fill out your application online.
  • DON'T write in script. If you don’t have access to a computer or typewriter, print neatly.
  • DON'T leave blank spaces. Missing information may cause your application to be sent back or delayed.
  • DON'T be unclear. If the question calls for a specific answer, don’t try to dodge it by being vague.
  • DON'T approach people about letters of recommendation at the last minute!
  • DON'T go overboard on your personal essay. Treat it as a professional application, not a creative project.
  • DON'T assume that the admission office has everything they need. Wait two or three weeks and then follow up to make sure.
  • DON'T put things off!

Your fulfillment of the graduate school requirements is how the school sees you. Following this list of DOs and DON'Ts will help you make a good impression on the admission committee.

Thunderbird Personal Essay - What international and cross-cultural background will you bring to Thunderbird and how will those past experiences add value to your classmates from around the world? Furthermore, what are your career aspirations immediately after graduation from Thunderbird and later in your long-term career path? How and why will a Thunderbird degree (combined with your past educational and professional experiences) enable you to achieve these objectives?

My Contribution to Thunderbird Classroom
The virtues of punctuality, importance of making the right decision in a business and the life changing implication of some of our actions has honed me to be a successful businessman with a progressive and positive mentality. Growing up in a family full of successful professionals from fields as diverse as medicine, social service, engineers, entrepreneurs, finance experts as well as politicians has helped me to observe their  roles and responsibilities from a very close quarter. This kept me abreast with the latest happenings in diverse fields.
Add to this my diverse, in depth, hands on business experience in – real estate, education and automobile sectors and a sound interpretation of financial management gained from working alongside astute chartered accountants has enabled me to come up with innovative ideas in critical situations. I believe I would be a valuable teammate, as my experiences combined with their experiences would help us evolve to become better professionals.
India being a land of  diverse culture and home to countless religion, customs and traditions have germinated a desire in me to learn about varied cultures. The fact that I would now be mingling with students from all parts of the globe adds to my enthusiasm or learning newer cultures.  Having friends from different cultural backgrounds gave wings to my desires to know more about different traditions and customs. While at school, I was part of the school’s team and have toured different parts of the country. My passion for the game gave me international exposure. My encounters have raised my awareness and sensitivity to different cultures. Travelling to Australia for Cricket tournaments as part of the sports-cum-cultural exchange with Australian families playing host has molded me into an individual more accepting of and receptive to change. I desire to leave a positive impact on my team members and be equally inspired with their experiences.
My leadership skills helped me take the sole responsibility of leading a team of 50 individuals on an election campaign for State Assembly Elections where I was involved in preparing election manifestos, stringent budget computing, extensive surveys, organizing public and party workers rallies and meetings, advertising and print and electronic media management. This enriching experience has heightened my understanding of societal problems, market research, people management and strategizing thus evolving my team player capabilities. This experience also helped me to sharpen my understanding of delegating responsibilities thereby raising the productivity of one’s time. Organizing fashion shows and cultural events within my institute has compounded my awareness of budgetary constraints and accustomed me to working to produce quality results irrespective of finances available. I am confident about being a valuable source of knowledge to my classmates with the rich expertise I have in hand.

Babson defines entrepreneurship as 'thinking or acting in a manner that is opportunity obsessed, holistic in approach, and leadership balanced.' Please describe how, in your own experiences, you have met some or all of that definition.

Growing up in a family full of successful professionals from fields as diverse as medicine, social service, engineers, entrepreneurs, finance experts as well as politicians has helped me to observe their  roles and responsibilities from a very close quarter. This kept me abreast with the latest happenings in diverse fields. The virtues of punctuality, importance of making the right decision in a business and the life changing implication of some of our actions has honed me to be a successful businessman with a progressive and positive mentality. Add to this my diverse, in depth, hands on business experience in – real estate, education and automobile sectors and a sound interpretation of financial management gained from working alongside astute chartered accountants has enabled me to come up with innovative ideas in critical situations. I can gladly say that most of the companies I am involved with has taken a 360 degree turn after I joined them. When I joined them, the work structure was unorganized as most of the employees were from the labor class. I succeeded in shaping the work pattern so as to yield better work satisfaction to them as well as to the company.

My Experiences, Challenges and Learnings:
XYZ, my family owned business is a dealership company for Bajaj Auto Ltd. having turnover of 40 crores. We were involved in the sales and service of Bajaj bikes in our area of command. Before I joined it in 2008, my father’s said, “ Use your constructive imagination to find out how much more you can make out of the rupee before you try and find out how much little you can give for the rupee.” His words of wisdom have been eternally etched in my mind and have helped me shape a successful career for myself. With this tenet in my mind, I assumed responsibility of our diverse business ventures. Within a short span of 2 years, I was in a position to undertake complete control of our business endeavors. Today, 4 years down the line, I am solely responsible for the 40% growth it has achieved.

From 2008, I am with XYZ Women’s College as Director of the College. I ensured smooth functioning of the college by drafting and implementing more stringent guidelines for fee payment. This reduced the number of defaulters from 30% to 15% and was a booster to improve quality education.

At XYZ Women’s College, I also encountered one of the most challenging situations in my career. The management along with the student community were discussing the ouster of the HOD of Interior Designing in lieu of his perfunctory attitude toward syllabus completion resulting in a below par exam performance of students, coercing students into opting for personal tuition and iniquitous mismanagement. However, the HOD successfully managed to cajole 70% of the faculty to resign overnight. Faced with a crucial problem of imparting quality education to my students I had to cross all barriers in terms of hindrances like limited time, scouting for the right candidate and irate and nervous students as well as parents. The efficient handling of an emergency threatening to burgeon to volatile proportions wreaking havoc on the future of budding careerists was thus handled without panic. Calm, strategic and calculative assessment of the crisis allowed us to bring about a definitive change in the functioning of the institute. Currently, we a more refined and assiduous faculty.

Growth in any business is of paramount importance and this happened to be my primary motive when I joined XYZ  in 2008.  I re-defined the credit policies for sub dealers and customers adhering to stricter time lines, introduced more rigorous HR policies to downsize distribution of salary advances and laid down more conducive terms with accessories and exchange business partners alike which translated into more profitable sales generating a turnover of USD 10 million.

My stint as Director at XYZ began in 2008. Here I learnt to be conservative in my approach with new partners and to safeguard our professional interests.  My strategies helped frame a better master planning of the new mixed-use real estate development project. I personally audited the company accounts and effected reversal of inappropriate expenses. This resulted in   reduction of loss from USD 250000 to USD 120000.This unhindered inflation took place primarily due to lack of monitoring from our end majorly because the project is in pre-launch stage.

In conclusion, the academic and practical structuring at Babson will help me deduce financial decision implications better, in turn enhancing my proficiency at handling the financial organization of my business. Babson will help me improve this figure with better systems besides facilitating better HR management, which will augment my ability to better all the above verticals of business.

Personal Essay of an Applicant to Central Film School....

Please attach on a separate page your personal statement. This should include an account of why you think you are suitable for the course and how it might support your future plans."

Growing up in a family that was associated with the movie making business in India, I have been exposed to different aspects of the film industry. Since I could perceive even the smallest area of film making in an elaborate manner I could easily pin down the area where I wanted to excel – it was scripting and directing movies. Seeing my vision translate to a movie on screen will be an experience that will prove to be immensely gratifying to a creative person like me. Making movies is a genuine interest and not an outcome of my family being in the same business.
I am deeply inspired by legends of Indian Cinema like Mr. Shyam Benegal and aspire to be an internationally acclaimed director. I would like to use this medium to make a change in the world. My movies will strive to make a difference in the world as I believe that films are a medium that easily penetrates the human mind, which often tends to offer resistance to social issues. Issues like poverty, child abuse, drug abuse and many other issues can be dealt and addressed as something creative like a movie can tend to affect both the perpetrator as well as the victim. I would like to join the contemporary filmmakers who do not consider box-office success to be of paramount importance.
I am determined to undertake the toil and turmoil that goes into making a movie. My experiences and deep involvement in the pre-production and post-production of movies like XYZ and PQR has helped me to envision my future working atmosphere and I am prepared to undertake the challenge. I consider myself to be in a different league than most of your other applicants because I have the added advantage of growing up in the middle of the film industry. I have learnt to take criticism as well as appreciation in the same vein.
Overall, my tryst with the field of Film making has been very beneficial and I was allured by the limitless challenges and problems it posed. I believe a Masters degree from your university will help me make my own identity as a unique Filmmaker in my country. I also believe that the amount of exposure your University provides would help me broaden my vision. Keeping in mind all the benefits I would reap from your esteemed university, I will definitely be an asset and employ my strengths to serve the institution ingenuously and I will strive to channel my ideas into more useful and pragmatic avenues. The course offered at your school suits my interest perfectly and I wish to be a contributing addition to the department of Film making at  Central Film School.

Statement of Purpose for BUSINESS PROGRAMME (SPECIALIZING IN WORLD FINANCE OR STOCK EXCHANGE)

I am applying to COURSE NAME  at your UNIVERSITY  as I am looking to accentuate my business skills. I come from a family with a business background and I plan to join it after I graduate.
There comes a point in every student’s life when he has to make a choice of his career. I am now at the threshold of choosing my career and I have chosen to train myself in different aspects of Business Management as I am convinced that I can take my family business to the next level with the knowledge and experience I gain in this period.
I also wish to gain global exposure and understand the various dynamics that make up a successful business unit. I am deeply influenced by an experience shared by my friend who is a few years senior to me. My friend Sunil, an IT graduate from India got an MBA degree from a top university and worked for some of the best organisation in different parts of the globe. He came back to India armed with immense experience and knowledge and joined his family business. Today they have exceeded ten times their net value than what it was before Sunil joined them. Sunil’s experience has motivated me to pursue this course. I understand it will not be easy for me to undergo the rigorous curriculum that your University has devised for its students. However, I am confident of being able to not only cross over this barrier but also excel in most of my Business projects.

When I was in 9th Grade, we had organised a Fair at the school. The objective of the fair was to innovate a product, sell and earn profits which would then be given away to an NGO. I led my team, which comprised of 12 of us. We strategized plans and after brain storming for over two days cane up with the idea of putting up a stall that sold Sandwiches and lemonade. The idea was to cook a food item, that was instantaneous, could be modified to suit the customers palate, thus providing customer satisfaction. I negotiated with the suppliers as such that in case the raw materials were not used, they would be returned thus minimising our losses if any. In the end, our business model worked and was a success. There were last minute glitches like a customer returning a sandwich because he found it too spicy and something like they had asked for Cheese Sandwich and the one made was full of cheese. In these cases, we promptly gave them a sandwich as per their choice as customer satisfaction was most important to us. Minimal wastage was top most on our agenda. Managing the team was easy until the fair started. However once people started coming in placing orders, cancelling some, adding to earlier orders all set routines went for a toss. Impromptu decision helped the team to excel and I owe it to the deep understanding between the team. Preparing a budget for the project, gathering funds, fixing a price for different sandwiches as per the cost incurred was my responsibility. I am proud to say that we earned a substantial margin for our efforts. Thus, I have proved myself to be innovative and lead projects to success.
I have an inquisitive and independent mind and take my own decisions. This trait helped me to be the school Prefect at my school. I was member of the Consumer Council where we helped create awareness for consumer’s rights. It gave me insights into the consumer psyche. The decision to develop a career in Business has also solely been mine. I often participate in various Businesses and Management based Quiz shows, which throws light on different aspects of a business. By nature, I am an extrovert. Because of my organisational skills, I have often been responsible for some successful events in the neighbourhood. For instance, I have helped organise the Republic Day Parade and looked after catering and budgeting for this event. I believe my leadership skills along with my team building abilities and my above experiences will set me apart from most of my other classmates at your University.
An atmosphere as eclectic as your campus where I get to meet students from diverse backgrounds is a rich ground for me to expand my knowledge about people living in different parts of the globe, understand their lifestyles, their needs and their culture. This will play a significant part when I would start to build business models for the companies I work for or for my own company.
Of the other countries that could apply to, I choose UK. I want to study in UK because it is a breeding ground for intellectuals and London being the economic hub, UK gives global exposure to varied business houses. I would get a chance to intern with the best. UK is also one of the oldest and world’s most renowned education systems which boasts of some of the best universities in the world which offers good opportunities after the under grad course.  Studies in UK would provide me the unique combination of accelerated growth and the flexibility to pursue this career path as it is the epi centre of the world economy.
My belief is that Science and technology can innovate, produce a product but one needs business knowledge to market and sell the product. With this degree, I wish to pursue subjects that will give me a deep understanding of the several different aspects that go into creating a successful business. I aim to follow in my father’s footsteps but only after I gain considerable experience and knowledge at a global level. I would like to expand the business by venturing into newer areas. However, for this I need to study the market, strategize, seek funds and get a through grasp on the intricacies of running a successful business. I am confident that a business course from your esteemed University will help me achieve these goals.

Personal Statement: Leadership Quality Personal Essay - For Kellog's

Describe your key leadership experiences and evaluate what leadership areas you hope to develop through your MBA experience. (600 word limit)

I look at leadership as a potential and ability to contribute significantly to an organization, a team or a cause. At various stages of life I have experienced my significant contributions, sometimes in a formal set up and sometimes in absolutely informal manner.
One of my most significant leadership experiences was to become a Project Leader with XYZ (London) and successfully managed a team of five Investment Banking professionals – each one having far more experience in their domain than what I had. Although I was the youngest member of the team and less experienced too, I had something which none of these highly knowledgeable and experience professional had; a fearless mind and willingness to ask stupid questions. This attribute led me to a greater understanding of the entire business model and process. As a result, I could connect these processes and understand the trade flow cycle. Having seen my initiatives, command over the process and potential to deliver, the Senior Management chose me to lead the project. This indeed was a proud moment for me but intimidating too.
As owner of the project, the challenges were numerous. The first and the most primary issue I had to address was the coordination among team members. First of all I clearly defined their individual roles within the team and facilitated them to bond with one another during drinks, team lunches, weekend soccer games, etc. Liaison with various global teams was the second big challenge. It was here where I realized the importance of developing personal relationships, escalations, incentivizing and prioritizing. The most difficult part however was the fact that the product was at a very nascent stage and the process was new for everyone. That’s where I really learnt the art to draw a road map in an unstructured and ambiguous atmosphere, quick decision making and taking complete ownership of your decisions taken. Most importantly, I learned leadership is not about solo performance but it’s about coming out winner as a team.
I have always liked assuming more responsibility as it allows me to learn and contribute more. I often find myself questioning the status-quo and feel it does wonders to an organization. One such experience I had while I was working with XYZ Capital where I pointed out the inefficiency of team structure in deal execution and suggested an alternate model for operating teams. On its merit, the same was implemented which indeed turned out to be more efficient.
One of the dimensions of my professional life which I enjoy the most is “Empowering others” especially when I help develop opportunities for my collogues around to enhance skills with a view to develop the overall preparedness to move onto higher roles. A recent such opportunity I had in my current team at XYZ Bank. A colleague, who was inducted in team about three months ago, was not performing up to the expectations. I helped him grasp the processes and worked very closely with him to identify areas where he needs to put in his extra efforts. I coached, conveyed confidence and gave him opportunity and latitude to run independently. The result was evident; his performance improved substantially.
With a rigorous MBA program, I hope to sharpen my financial acumen, analytical abilities and execution capabilities. It would help me develop Seasoned Judgment; ability to apply broad knowledge and experience while addressing complex issues, ability to navigate through ambiguity and ability to take calculated but timely decision. An MBA program would increase my problem-solving abilities.
A well structured MBA program at Kellogg’s would not only challenge me go beyond what has been  experienced and learned but also push me to champion new ideas and initiatives, in turn foster innovation and Entrepreneurial Risk taking ability. Kellogg’s is a campus known for its people’s diversity in cultures and backgrounds where the learning process involves working together and a genuine team work. The MBA program here would help me develop finer skills of forging positive and trustworthy relationships at work. I would learn to establish team oriented work environment factoring the varying needs and style of different people.

Writing the Personal Statement: Top 10 Rules

Strive for depth rather than breadth. Narrow focus to one or two key themes, ideas or experiences

Provide the reader with insight into what drives you
Be yourself, not the 'ideal' applicant
Get creative and imaginative in the opening remarks, but make sure it's something that no one else could write

Writing the Personal Statement: Top 10 Pitfalls

Why Universities Ask for Statement of Purpose

Statement of Purpose (SOP) is mandatory requirement when applying for Graduate Schools. Some schools call them as Personal Statement or College Admission Essay. For Undergraduate admission, students will be asked to write college admission essay on a specific topic, but for Graduate School admission, it will be more general. Universities use SOP to lean more about you. When you are applying for a program located half way around the world, SOP makes it easy to decide if they want to admit you to their program.

You can find lots of sample SOPs and students usually tend to copy the content fromSample Statement of Purpose and use it as it is. But, its very important to explain what kind of person you are and how you will contribute to college. So, try be as Original as possible in your Statement of Purpose. Same applies to sample LORs.  Essentially you are going to write a story about you, but you can find format of SOP, page layout, structure, language style used, but same story and personal experience cannot be yours. So, avoid copy pasting college essays when you create your own SOP.

Statement of Purpose - Masters in Corporate Finance.

    STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Bryant McGill had said, ‘Ambition is not what a man would do, but what a man does, for ambition without action is fantasy.’ My ambition is to include the name of my family business in the top 100 Financial Companies of the world. I have always dreamt to see my name amongst Internationally acclaimed JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch & in India companies like Religare & Edelweiss. To reach there, I will have to act and that’s why I happen to apply to your esteemed University for my Masters in Corporate Finance.

Like every other student when I was 15 years old, I had to make a career decision for myself. At that point of time, I chose to enter the field of Finance and make a mark for myself. It was quiet obvious that I would want to get into this field. My family owned one of the most successful Financial Consulting Company in Mumbai. I grew up observing the elders in my family discuss Debts, Equities, Premiums, Principal amounts, the turnover figures of the various clients and so on. These discussions ultimately led me to gain interest in the field of finance. I gradually came to appreciate the importance of finance in the modern world. I quickly wanted to grow up and join them However that never happened. I had to complete my Bachelors, intern under various reputed financial companies and work my hard way up to where I am now.
Post my Senior Secondary (SSC) Examinations, I did a summer internship from April 2006 to June 2006. My experience while doing my internships with companies like XYZ (India) Pvt. Ltd.-Financial Mall Division, XYZ BPO Services where I dealt with Unit Link Insurance Policies (ULIP) was very fresh and exciting, as I was exposed to the real corporate world and the finance industry’s working for the first time. During my Bachelor’s, courses like Business, Management, Economics and Finance impressed upon me the importance of the financial sector in the economy. The practical experience during my internships gave me a new confidence to go ahead and learn more, as I thoroughly enjoyed working for this industry. What I most enjoyed was facing a challenging situation like planning a basket of customized financial products for a few High Networth Income (HNI) clients taking into consideration the market scenario and their risk taking appetite at that point. This service was instrumental in turning them as our permanent clients.
Through case studies and lectures, I broadened my understanding of economic principles while learning about management and its relationship to finance. This was particularly fascinating at the time because the global financial crisis of 2009 was wreaking havoc on economies and businesses around the world, and the theories that we learned were directly applicable to the current events in the news.
Currently, my job portfolio is of a Management Trainee - Corporate Finance, wherein I am currently working on three Debt Funding Projects under my seniors. When I had joined XYZ Corporate Finance division, the most interesting and challenging industry that I found to work on was the Casino and Gaming industry. XYZ Corp is our client and is the leading company in the casino and gaming industry in India. This project was struggling to raise debt, as Casino and Gaming Industry in India was considered as a Taboo, and there were only three places in India (Goa, Sikkim & Union territory of Diu-Daman) which were legally allowed for Casino. Since banks were not open to fund a casino company, what we explained to the banks was that they would not be funding the casino players or the gamblers, but the company, which is dealing in casino business, and there is a law of probability, which is in the Gaming industry that takes care of the risk factor. Thus, by further discussions with the bank and convincing them that Casino funding is rather opening a new door for business, we successfully managed to raise debt for XYZ Corp.

I have learnt in the process that corporate finance consultants not only develop great relationship with banks and financial institutions (FI), but also understand the appetite and liking of each bank/FI towards the various industries. When the clients approach investment bankers, they not only prepare a project report, but also decide the right bank to be approached for particular industry/project. Thus, during my work on XYZ Corp’s project, I learnt to solve the complications and understand the importance of project finance consultants, specifically debt funding in the Investment banking industry.
It is due to my understanding of the importance of finance and investment, coupled with my longstanding interest for this subject that I have decided to pursue postgraduate studies in finance at your prestigious University. A Master’s Degree in Finance (core module corporate finance) would ideally complement my graduate degree in Banking. I have chosen to pursue master’s studies in the UK because it is home to many of the leading financial professionals and institutions in the world. The recent financial crisis has transformed the finance industry, and studying in the UK is ideal for grasping the changes that are currently taking place in this field. Specifically, the resources and expertise available in your university will provide me with a broad and deep learning experience.
Apart from study and work, I have been engaged in serious theatre and acted in commercially successful stage plays for the past three to four years with well-known writer-director Mr. XYZ. Acting is a passion and it has helped me to evolve into a confident individual. While doing theater I realized that it completely groomed my personality with regards to presenting myself on a public platform. Stage fright disappeared and this helped me while conducting seminars for the department of Banking & Insurance while pursuing my Degree in commerce graduation.
My long term goal is to join my Family Organization XYZ (India) Private Limited, which is an NBFC into Investment Banking providing Financial Consultancy by raising Debt Funds for Clients from various industries such as Hospitality, Infrastructure, Bullion, Manufacturing, etc, for the last 20 years. Equipped with the technical expertise and professional skills and global exposure I could elevate Money Managers to be amongst the top Investment Banking firms in the world. I am confident that I am well-prepared to meet the demands of your program, and I would greatly appreciate your consideration in choosing me to be a part of your University.
